Introduction

This initiative is an open, collaborative effort, under the auspices of the CEN/ISSS Learning Technologies Workshop, to achieve interoperability between learning object repositories. A Yahoo Group has been set up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LORinterop/ to support e-mail-based collaboration (Feel free to join - instructions are available on the site!). This Wiki documents the current status.

Originally, we focused on an Application Programme Interface (API) for querying: we call this API the Simple Query Interface (SQI). We are now also considering issues related to a common metadata schema and to a common query language. The overall objective of these activities is to build up a global Learning Network of learning object repositories. The IST-funded PROLEARN Network of Excellence is coordinating some of the practical experimentation with these specifications. Interoperability Case Studies based on SQI

  • The ELENA Smart Space for Learning:
    • The ELENA Project has developed a novel tool for corporate human capital development (HCD) called HCD Suite. Based on the SQI interface specification, the HCD Suite connects several valuable knowledge repositories, ranging from course databases to the Amazon bookstore, providing corporate learners a unique possibility for chosing the best suitable learning resources.
    • Feel free to trial out an operational SQI-based network using ELENA's search client HCD Suite

    • SQI Test Client Tool (zip). In order to use this tool, please download all files .jar and run SQIClient.jar (java -jar SQIClient.jar). It is also available at the CVS server: alice.wu-wien.ac.at Repository: /home/cvs/repository/ELENA Module: tools/SQIClient.
    • Use Case and Common Schema (based on existing standards such as LOM and DC) (doc (zipped))
  • The ARIADNE knowledge pool system
    • An SQI target was build on the ARIADNE knowledge pool. This target is already operational inside ARIADNE and Merlot
    • In the context of GLOBE, SQI targets were build on top of Edna Online and Merlot.
    • A federated search target is offered which acts as a gateway to the latter systems. This target is integrated in the ARIADNE query and indexation tool.
